Cal Hands Oregon Volleyball 3-1 Loss

Oregon senior Monique Tobbagi had her second 20-kill match of the season, but the Oregon volleyball team fell to California, 30-21, 27-30, 30-28, 30-22, in front of 486 fans at McArthur Court Thursday evening. Oregon is 8-15 overall, 0-12 Pacific-10 Conference and California improves to 8-12, 3-9.

Tobbagi, who earlier this season became the fifth player in Oregon history to tally 1,000 kills, now has 1,077 career kills. The San Jose, Calif., native also added 13 digs for her second-straight double double.

Oregon junior Stephanie Martin added 15 kills and four blocks and Lindsay Closs had 10 kills, six digs and six blocks.

The Ducks fell behind early in game one but game back to win the second game. Oregon led by as many as nine points in game 3, but the Bears rallied late and won the game on two service aces by Gabrielle Abernathy. Abernathy had a match-high five service aces and the Bears finished with 13 total.

'It's the little things that make a big difference,' Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. 'In game three we increased our level of play to give ourselves a chance to win and then we starting playing not to lose.'

Senior setter Julie Gerlach came off the bench in the first game and finished the match with nine kills, 40 assists, four blocks and hit .300.

Oregon hosts Stanford tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with women's basketball. One general admission ticket is good for both competitions.
