Women's Soccer Knocks Off Sacramento State, 2-1
Nov. 1, 2001
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -
Oregon State University's women's soccer team battled to a 2-1 win against Sacramento State on Thursday afternoon.
Sacramento State opened the scoring just under three minutes into the game when Lisa Wrightsman scored her eighth goal of the season at the 2:55 mark.
The Beavers did not wait long to tie the game at one apiece. In the seventh minute of play, sophomore midfielder Lindsey Beem put the ball past Hornet keeper Amy Seely with a low shot to the outside corner. Jillian Nicks, a freshman forward, assisted on the goal.
The Beavers outshot the Hornets, peppering them with 20 shots, 13 in the first half. Sacramento State managed only seven shots in the game. Seely made seven saves to keep the score close.
'We struggled to connect with our passes a little bit,' commented OSU head coach Steve Fennah. 'But we worked hard and came out with a win.'
The victory, Oregon State's ninth of the season, did not come without a price.
'I'm pleased with the way we played,' Fennah said. 'But we picked up a few bumps and bruises. Morgan (Crabtree) picked up a knock, and Jo Fletcher, and Beemer (Lindsey Beem). Hopefully we'll get those guys healthy for Sunday.'
The Beavers improved to 9-7-1 overall with the win, while the Hornets fell to 5-10-1. OSU also improved its record against Sacramento State to 3-3-0 all-time, dating back to 1995. Sacramento State had won the previous three meetings.
The Beavers return home to host the Oregon Ducks on Sunday. Game-time is scheduled for 2 PM.
