Arizona Football Sunday Teleconference Quotes

Nov. 4, 2001

On the win over California:'The game at Cal was the first of the November schedule, so it was a critical game. We also reached the end of playing so many weeks where we were getting close but not being able to win the game. Winning is so much better than losing, and I don't think the fact that the Cal Bears are 0-8 takes anything away from the win. We played a very solid game, and we are going to have play as well or better this week against Stanford.'

'Our defense really did a nice job. We put a lot of pressure on the quarterback. We had eight sacks, but we probably could have had 11 because some of the guys were flying around, and we missed their quarterback a couple of times. We really didn't allow them to get very much done.'

'The offense had a heck of a second quarter. Jason (Johnson) was real sharp. We got the setups we anticipated, and the receivers did a great job of running the routes and presenting themselves. (Bobby) Wade was the sharpest. Cal is a man team for the most part, but we changed our formations up a lot so that they couldn't double up on him (Wade). In the second quarter we were sending four receivers down field.'

'We gave up two sacks early, but we stiffened up. They still continued to bring the linebacker/safety blitzes, but we did a much better job of picking them up. Jason (Johnson) had some quicker throws, and he didn't get knocked down very much. His uniform was pretty clean at the end of the game.'

On Arizona's outlook for the next two games:'In November we have two things happening. We are playing for our own championship because we have a chance to win three in a row and qualify for a bowl game. We are not out of it yet. We are just going to have to play as hard as we can to get there.'

On Arizona's injury situation:'Darren Safranek is going to be out for the rest of the year. We think it's an ACL. And, he is probably going to have surgery on his shoulder at a later time. We are hopeful that (Leo) Mills and (Reggie) Sampay will return this week and get some work done.'
