Men's Hoops Wins Exhibition Opener In OT, 101-91
Nov. 4, 2001
LOS ANGELES - Behind 23 points from sophomore guard Desmon Farmer and 22 from senior forward Sam Clancy, the USC men's basketball team came from behind to defeat L.A. City Stars, 101-91, in overtime, in its exhibition opener at the Lyon Center on Sunday (Nov. 4) in front of 735.
The Trojans trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half but rallied late. Jelani Janisse's layup with five seconds remaining in regulation gave the Stars an 82-80 lead. But Farmer drove the length of the court and his driving layup went through the rim as the buzzer sounded, sending the game into overtime.
The Stars, led by Derrick Anderson's 21 points, went up 89-86 two minutes into overtime. But the Trojans countered with an 11-0 run to go ahead 97-89 with 34 seconds to go, sealing the win.
'We've got a long way to go,' sixth-year Coach Henry Bibby said. 'I was very pleased with our young guys, but the older guys have to pick it up. We can't rest on our laurels.
'Desmon has really picked it up in practice. He's bigger and stronger this year and more focused and he showed that tonight.'
Said Farmer on his game-tying layup at the end of regulation: 'I just felt like the other team was back on their heels. I just decided to get by them as quick as I could.'
Senior point guard Brandon Granville did not play, sitting out for precautionary reasons after suffering an injury to his mouth in practice earlier in the week.
The Trojans, who shot only 37.9 in the first half, rebounded in the second half, going 59.4 from the floor. Errick Craven finished as USC's third-leading scorer with 17 points and sophomore Jerry Dupree, a junior college transfer, scored 14 points.
The Trojans trailed 78-74 with 1:25 to go in regulation, but a Craven layup brought USC to within two. After a defensive stop, USC tied the score on a Clancy follow dunk. Janisse put the Stars ahead 80-78 with 44 seconds to go, but Clancy tied it up again with a hook in the lane with 35 seconds left. Janisse scored on a layup with five seconds left, setting the stage for Farmer.
USC concludes its exhibition slate on Friday (Nov. 9) when it hosts EA Sports at 7 p.m. at the Lyon Center. The Trojans' season opener is against Wyoming in the first round of the Preseason NIT at 6 p.m. at the Sports Arena.
