Pac-10 Football Players of the Week (11/5/01)
Nov. 5, 2001
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Quarterback Joey Harrington of Oregon, safety Lamont Thompson of Washington State and Troy Polamalu of USC have been named Pac-10 Players of the Week in football.
Harrington, a senior from Portland, Ore., directed Oregon to a 42-24 win against Arizona State. Harrington completed 19 of 32 passes (.594) for 319 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions. His touchdown passes covered 14, 22, 24, 13, 13 and 38 yards. Harrington's six touchdown passes tied his own school record and is just one shy of the Pac-10 single-game record for a regulation game. It marks the second time this season Harrington has been named Pac-10 offensive player of the week.
Thompson, a senior from Richmond, Calif., had a record-setting performance in Washington State's 20-14 upset win against No. 9-ranked UCLA. Thompson tied the Pac-10 single-game record by intercepting four Bruin passes. In the process, he tied the Pac-10 career record for interceptions as he upped his total to 21 career picks. Two of Thompson's interceptions came in the last three minutes of the game to thwart a UCLA comeback bid. He also was credited with five tackles and two additional pass deflections. The Washington State defense limited UCLA to 12 first downs, 85 yards rushing, 140 yards passing, 225 yards total offense, just 2-for-11 on third-down conversion attempts and forced seven turnovers.
Polamalu, a junior from Tenmile, Ore., made the big play on special teams in USC's 16-10 overtime win against Oregon State. Polamalu blocked a punt which a teammate recovered in the end zone for USC's only touchdown in regulation.
Also nominated for offensive player of the week honors were tailbacks Willie Hurst of Washington and Delvon Flowers of Arizona State and quarterbacks Jason Johnson of Arizona and Carson Palmer of USC. Also nominated on defense were safeties Greg Carothers of Washington, Brandon Nash of Arizona and Jason Shivers of Arizona State and linebackers Kevin Mitchell of Oregon and Robert Thomas of UCLA. Punters Nate Fikse of UCLA, Nick Murphy of Arizona State and Alan Cox of Washington State, return man Bobby Wade of Arizona and kicker Jim Skurski of Washington were nominated for special teams play.
