Women's Basketball Ranked No. 22 in Preseason Associated Press Poll

TEMPE, Ariz. - The defending Pac-10 Champion Sun Devil women's basketball team is ranked 22nd in the Associated Press preseason poll released Tuesday.

The No. 22 ranking marks the first time in 18 years that ASU has been ranked in the preseason AP poll dating back to a No. 16 listing in the 1983-84 preseason rankings.

ASU has shown up in five of the preseason polls this year with their highest ranking being 17th by Basketball Times, Athlon's and the Women's Basketball Journal.

Connecticut is ranked No. 1 in the AP poll followed by Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma and Duke. Arizona State is one of three Pac-10 Conference teams ranked in the poll, including No. 9 Stanford and No. 19 Washington, while conference members USC, Oregon and Arizona were also receiving votes in the poll.

ASU, which has been picked to finish second and fourth in the Pac-10 by the media and coaches, respectively, returns four starters and seven letterwinners from its 2001 Pac-10 co-championship squad including its top four scorers and top five rebounders from one year ago.

The 2000-01 Sun Devils turned in a 20-11 overall record and a school-record 12-6 mark in Pac-10 play to earn their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1992. First-team All-Pac-10 selections Melody Johnson and Amanda Levens as well as Pac-10 All-Freshman team selection Betsy Boardman are among the returning starters for ASU in 2001-02.

Coming off a 67-53 win over Team Concept in its first exhibition game last Sunday, ASU wraps up the exhibition season Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena against Delta Kosice (Slovakia) at 7 p.m. The Sun Devils tip off the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 17 against St. Peter's at 2:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. That Nov. 17 game is part of an ASU sports tripleheader with the men's basketball team taking on Stephen F. Austin at 11:30 a.m. and the volleyball team taking on California at 7:30 p.m.
