RECENTLY Oregon ended a 15-match losing streak by defeating Portland, 31-33, 30-27, 30-24, 30-26. The Ducks outblocked the Pilots 17-6 and were led by Lindsay Closs' career-high 10 blocks and Monique Tobbagi's 17 kills. Defensively, sophomore Lindsay Murphy paced Oregon with 16 digs.

HEAD COACH CARL FERREIRA Second year head coach Carl Ferreira (167-91 overall, 19-35 Oregon) led the Ducks to their best overall finish since 1996 last season. Ferreira recruited the 2000 National Junior College Player of the Year as well as the Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year. Ferreira, a Hilo, Hawaii native, is joined by second-year assistants Anna Reznicek and Jared Sliger.

BLOCK PARTY Junior transfers Stephanie Martin and Lindsay Closs are making their presence known in the middle. Martin has 104 blocks and Closs has 109. It is the first time since 1993 (Karissa Meith, 145, Angee Henderson, 110) that two Oregon players have surpassed the 100-block plateau. It's also the first time since 1996 (Alli White, 120) that any Oregon player has posted 100+ blocks. Martin's 10 block assists against UT Arlington already puts her tied for seventh all-time for block assists in a single match. Martin currently ranks fifth in the Pac-10 (1.23 bpg) and Closs ranks sixth (1.16).

MONIQUE'S MILESTONE With her nine-kill performance at Arizona State, Tobbagi became just the fifth player in Oregon history to tally 1,000 career kills and now has 1,112. Monique was named to both preseason all-tournament teams after leading Oregon to a tournament championship at UT Arlington. At the Oregon Classic, Tobbagi had three double doubles and finished with 66 kills, 45 digs and a .288 hitting percentage. Tobbagi had a season-high 21 kills in Oregon's victory over Boise State, her first 20-kill match of the season and had her second 20-kill match against California Nov. 1.

RALLY SCORING Things aren't the same in women's collegiate volleyball this season. The NCAA scoring committee adopted rally scoring for the 2001 season. The first four games will be played to 30 and a point will be scored everytime the ball is put into play, regardless of which team served. A fifth game, if necessary, will be played to 15 points. Let scoring was also adopted, meaning if the ball grazes the net on a serve but still goes over, it remains in play.

A LOOK AT OREGON STATE The Beavers split with the bay area schools last week, sweeping California before losing 3-0 to the No. 3 Cardinal. Oregon State is eyeing a trip to the NCAA Tournament, led by Gina Schmidt's 3.79 kpg and 3.35 dpg.

THE SERIES Oregon leads the series 52-31-1, but the Beavers swept Oregon earlier this season. The teams split last season, each winning on the road. The last time a team swept the season was in 1997 when Oregon State won both contests.
