Nov. 8, 2001

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - Arizona State junior Adria Engel picked up a first round win Thursday in women's singles action at the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships at the Brookhaven Country Club.

A two-time All-American, Engel topped SMU's Kit Carson 6-0, 6-1 in today's first round. She'll now face No. 1 seed Jessica Lehnhoff of Florida in tomorrow's 1:00 p.m. CT second round match. This is Engel's second appearance at this event - she reached the quarterfinals as a freshman two years ago.

This event, presented by The Dallas Morning News and hosted by SMU, is the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament and is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The first events - the Riviera Women's and ITA Men's All-American Championships - were held last month, and the third event is season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
