Men's Hoop Team Rolls In Preseason Opener, 108-56

Nov. 8, 2001

The Arizona State men's basketball team jumped out to a 70-27 first-half lead and cruised to a 108-56 win over Kilsyth (Australia) tonight at Wells Fargo Arena.

Chad Prewitt led the way with 20 points and seven boards, including 8-of-9 from the line. Tommy Smith added 16 points and 10 boards, while Tanner Shell had 13 points off the bench, including 6-of-6 from the line. Donnell Knight had 12 points and 12 boards and made all eight free throws, as ASU was 31-of-39 (.795) from the line.

ASU played 13 guys, as injuries kept Chris Osborne (wrist) and Tyson Johnston (knee) out of the rotation. Sophomore guard Jonathan Howard also did not play, as he and the staff are considering using his redshirt season this year.

'Jon has been playing very well, so that is making the decision tougher. Even though it is an exhibition game if he plays he cannot redshirt so we wanted him to think it over during the weekend. We have a lot of depth this year. But he is a good kid who is doing very well in school and we didn't think we needed to rush the decision.'

No Sun Devil played more than 21 minutes. Evans started a lineup of Curtis Millage and Kyle Dodd at the guards, Tommy Smith and Awvee Storey at the forwards and Prewitt at center.

ASU will take on the EA Sports All-Stars Monday. EA Sports is 2-4 as of Thursday and has topped BYU and Air Force and lost by only five to Utah.
