Beavers Battle To Women's Soccer Tie
Nov. 9, 2001
PULLMAN, Wash. - Oregon State tied Washington State 2-2 in Pacific-10 women's soccer Friday afternoon to keep the Beavers' postseason hopes alive. OSU (10-7-2 overall, 2-5-1 Pacific-10) concludes the regular season Sunday at No. 13 Washington, and Friday's draw with the Cougars (7-8-1, 2-5-1) means there's still a chance for an NCAA Tournament berth.
'A win would have really helped, but I don't think this hurt us,' Oregon State head coach Steve Fennah said. 'We'll go to Washington excited, but we always enjoy playing them, anyway.'
Oregon State tied the game at 2-2 when Lindsey Beem put away a penalty kick in the 81st minute, it was Beem's fifth goal in the past three games and moved her up the school's all-time list of single-season leaders in a pair of categories. Beem has seven goals this season, tying her for ninth place with Jenna Leavitt (1992), Cacey Zimmer (1994) and BreeAnna Jolin (1999), she also has 17 points this season, tying her for 10th place with Zimmer (1993) and Jeanette Scotti (1993).
The Beavers had a chance at the game-winner later as Emily Hughes nipped the ball past WSU goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen, OSU's Katie Henderson got a foot on it and it hit Jorgensen's back. The ball rolled along the goal line but Oregon State was unable to knock it in before Jorgensen corralled it.
'It was a battle, as much as anything else,' Fennah said. 'Both teams battled from start to finish. In the second half, we had a lot better of the play than we did in the first half. We had three real good opportunities that we felt we should have taken care of in the second half and overtime but we didn't, so give Washington State credit - they had a very good performance defensively. And I'm proud of our kids, as well - they went out and searched for a way to win.'
The Beavers finished with a 19-15 edge in shots. After a scoreless first half, the Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute as Jillian Nicks tapped the ball in from the left side after being set up by passes from Hughes and Morgan Crabtree.
WSU evened the game on Meghan Cecchini's goal in the 55th minute, then took the lead on Rachel Rodrick's penalty-kick goal in the 79th minute. Less than two minutes later, though, Beem scored to knot the game for good.
