Nov. 9, 2001

Stanford, Calif. - The third-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team notched its ninth win over a ranked opponent this season with a 3-0 victory over No. 11 UCLA tonight in front of a season-high crowd of 4,351 at Maples Pavilion. Game scores were 30-23, 30-23, 30-18.

The Cardinal improve to 22-2 on the year, 13-1 in the Pac-10 while the Bruins drop to 14-7 overall, 9-5 in the Pac-10.

'I thought we came out aggressive tonight,' said head coach John Dunning. 'That was the key. Things went really well for us. Robyn (Lewis) played well tonight and made good choices. Ogonna (Nnamani) and Logan (Tom) were hot tonight and she went to them. It was pretty great.'

In game one, Stanford ran out to an 8-2 lead on a Logan Tom service ace and extended the lead to 13-4 on a kill by Sara McGee. The Cardinal reached 18-8 on a kill by Tom and went up 23-11 on a block by McGee and Ogonna Nnamani. With Stanford leading 27-16, the Bruins rallied off five consecutive points to reach 21-27. A kill by Tom ended the rally and put the Cardinal within two points of victory. A kill by Nnamani gave Stanford game point at 29-22. Another Nnamani kill sealed the game at 30-23. Stanford hit .412 for the game while Tom had six kills and Nnamani had five.

UCLA jumped out to the early 7-4 lead to open game two but the Cardinal tied up the game at 7-7 on a Bruin error. With the game tied at 10-all, Stanford went on a seven point run to go up 17-10. UCLA pulled to within four at 13-17, forcing a Cardinal timeout. Stanford pushed on to reach 21-15 on a Logan Tom kill and 25-20 on a Tom's third service ace on the night. A Nnamani kill put the Cardinal at game point at 28-22 and a Bruin hitting error gave Stanford the 30-23 win. Tom had eight kills while Nnamani had nine in game two.

Game three began close with the two teams tied at six-all. Stanford slowly began to pull away, then at 10-8, the Cardinal strung together four points to go up 14-8. A kill by Tara Conrad gave Stanford the 18-10 lead and a block by Sara McGee and Ogonna Nnamani forced a UCLA timeout at 23-12. Logan Tom's kill at 27-15 put Stanford up by 12, but back-to-back kill by Bruin Lauren Fendrick and a Cardinal miscue pulled UCLA closer at 18-27. But the Cardinal would reach game and match point on a Nnamani kill and a block would give Stanford the 30-18 victory.

Stanford was led by Logan Tom's match-high 20 kill and 14 digs. Tom hit .543 (20-1-35) committing only one error on the night. Ogonna Nnamani contributed 18 kills and four blocks on the night. Tara Conrad checked in with 11 kills and a match-high five blocks.

Stanford hit .450 for the match while holding the Bruins to a .169 clip for the night.

Stanford is next in action on Saturday, November 10 against No. 5 USC in Maples Pavilion at 7 p.m.
