Lauren Kalvaria-Gabriela Lastra Claim Doubles Title At ITA National Indoors

Nov. 10, 2001

FARMERS BRANCH, Tex. - Stanford's top doubles team of seniors Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, Fla.) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, Nev.) captured the women's doubles championship Saturday evening at the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Championships at the Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Tex.

In addition, Kalvaria advanced to tomorrow's singles final after beating Northwestern's Marine Piriou 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 in today's semifinals.

On the doubles side, Kalvaria-Lastra beat Wake Forest's Bea Bielik and Janet Bergman 8-4 in Saturday's final, which lasted just 40 minutes. The doubles title is the second for the tandem in a national collegiate championship, as the Cardinal duo also won the 2000 Riviera Women's All-American Championships. The title is the second straight at this event for Lastra, who won last season's title with Laura Granville and became the first player to win the tourney with two different partners. Kalvaria-Lastra recorded an 8-6 triumph over UCLA's Petya Marinova and Sara Walker in the semifinals earlier in the day.

Kalvaria, ranked No. 2 nationally, will be playing in her second national singles final tomorrow against Wake Forest's Bea Bielik in a rematch of last May's NCAA semifinals. The Cardinal netter will be looking to become the fifth straight Stanford player to win the Indoor singles title.
