Men's And Women's Cross Country Squads Sweep NCAA West Regional

Tucson, Ariz. - The Stanford men's and women's cross country squads swept the NCAA West Regional team championships at the Randolph North Golf Course to continue their season-long dominance and remain unbeaten this season. Stanford's Donald Sage (30:43.0) won the men's 10000-meter race, while teammate Grant Robison finished second (30:50.10). Lauren Fleshman (20:52.00) finished second in the women's 6000 meter event behind Arizona's Tara Chaplin (20:40.10).
The second-ranked men's team totaled 37 points in its 10000-meter victory, easily topping second place Portland (91). The top-ranked women's squad totaled 39 points with Arizona (80) its closest challenger in a 6000-meter race. All four teams qualified for the NCAA Championships hosted by Furman on Monday, November 19 in Greenville, South Carolina. The men won their sixth consecutive NCAA West Regional team title, while the women have won the event five of the last six seasons.
'Our teams ran well today,' said Stanford director of cross country Vin Lananna. 'Our main goal coming into the event was to do everything possible to qualify for the NCAA Championships.'
'I feel great about our team, added Sage, who won his first career collegiate cross country event. 'Our coach has done a great job preparing us, and we're peaking at the right time. I feel good about our team in the NCAA Championships.'
The Cardinal had four Top 10 runners on the men's side with Ian Dobson (9th, 31:26.60) and Louis Luchini (10th, 31:27.20) joining Sage and Robison. Chris Emme (15th, 31:38.20) and Joe Urbanksi (17th, 31:40.70) had Top 20 finishes, while James Nielsen (47th, 32:48.20) also competed for the Cardinal.
On the women's side, Alicia Craig (4th, 21:04.40) and Sara Bei (7th, 21:20.80) joined Fleshman in the Top 10. The remaining four Cardinal women's runners all had Top 20 finishes. Laura Turner placed 12th (21:51.40), followed by Mariel Ettinger (15th, 21:53.60), Erin Sullivan (17th, 21:59.20) and Jeane Goff (18th, 22:00.90).
The Stanford cross country teams will next compete at the NCAA Championships hosted by Furman (Greenville, SC) on Monday, November 19.
