No. 7 Cal Women's Swimming Wins Continental Airlines Challenge

HOUSTON, TX - The California women's swim team captured six of 11 events on the way to winning the Continental Airlines Challenge Friday in Houston, TX. The Bears earned 227 points, topping Virginia, Rice, Washington, Missouri and Penn State. Individual winners for Cal included sophomore Natalie Coughlin, senior Alice Henriques, junior Staciana Stitts and sophomore Danielle Becks. The Bears also won the 400 medley and 400 free relays.
Coughlin, the 2001 NCAA Swimmer of the Year, set a meet record in the 50 free with a time of 22.90. Henriques captured the 200 back (2:00.36), Stitts won the 200 breast (2:17.54) and Becks placed first in the 200 free (1:50.73). Cal placed first and established a meet record in the 400 medley relay (3:44.67 Henriques, Coughlin, Stitts, junior Michelle Harper) and won the meet's final event, the 400 free relay (3:26.06 Coughlin, Harper, freshman Lauren Medina, Becks).
