Stanford Sweeps NCAA Cross Country West Regional

Tucson, Ariz. (Nov. 10) - In Tucson on Saturday, both the Stanford men's and women's teams swept the NCAA Cross Country West Regional for the sixth straight year.
The Cardinal men took the regional title with 37 points, far out-distancing runner-up Portland's 91 points. The Stanford women claimed the championship with 39 points, followed by host Arizona's 80 points. All four of these teams have earned automatic bids to next week's NCAA Championships at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
In the 10k men's race, Cardinal runners Donald Sage (30:43.40) and Grant Robison (30:50.10) finished first and second, respectively. Oregon's Jason Hartmann was third in a time of 30:57.60, Fasil Bizuneh (30:59.10) from Arizona State was fourth, and Portland's Joe Driscoll (31:01.40) was fifth .
On the women's side, host Arizona's Tara Chaplin was the individual champion in a time of 20:40.10 in the 6k race. Pac-10 champion Lauren Fleshman, from Stanford, was the regional runner-up in 20:52.00, followed by Arizona State's Lisa Aguilera (20:54.50) in third. Stanford's Alicia Craig (21:04.40) finished fourth, and Washington State's Everlyne Lagat (21:06.60) was fifth.
'Our team ran well today. Our main goal coming into today's race was to do everything possible to advance to the NCAA Championships,' said Stanford head coach Vin Lananna. 'Our men's team made a move in the middle like we planned, and I am happy with the outcome of our strategy. The strategy the women used was to get good position and finish strong down the stretch.'
