Putz Nets Lone Goal in UW Women's Soccer Victory
Nov. 11, 2001
SEATTLE - Senior forward Caroline Putz scored the only goal Sunday just two minutes into what could be her final collegiate home game, lifting the 16th-ranked Washington women to a 1-0 victory over Oregon State at Husky Soccer Field.
A crowd of 965 witnessed the final regular-season game for Washington which improved to 12-4-2 overall with a 6-2-1 Pacific-10 Conference record. Oregon State dropped to 10-8-2 and 2-6-1 in conference play.
The Huskies will discover their postseason fate on Monday. Washington is virtually assured a berth into the 64-team NCAA Tournament field, but it is uncertain whether UW will be selected as one of 16 schools that host first- and second-round games.
'In tomorrow's selection show we are hopeful,' Coach Lesle Gallimore said regarding the Huskies chances to host NCAA Tournament games for the second straight season. 'Whatever happens, as long as we are in the tournament, we will be happy.'
Shortly after taking part in the pregame Senior Day presentation, senior forwards Gina Brewer and Putz combined for the game's only goal. Brewer sent a long pass from the right side to Putz at the left. Putz beat a defender and lined a 20-yard shot that carried just over the out-stretched arms of OSU goalkeeper Jo Fletcher and under the crossbar at 1:51.
Putz moved into fourth place among all-time Washington scorers with her 22nd career goal.
'For Gina to get the assist on Caroline's goal is a fitting way for them to both go out,' said Gallimore. 'When they were freshmen they hooked up a number of times and in the last four years they have become very good friends.'
The Huskies had several other dangerous scoring opportunities, including a shot in the ninth minute by senior Erin Otagaki that was cleared off the goal line by Beaver defender Whitney Horn.
Junior goalkeeper Hope Solo, a national player of the year candidate, had two saves en route to Washington's ninth shutout. Fletcher had four saves for Oregon State which was outshot 17-6.
The Huskies will congregate Monday to view the live Fox Sports Northwest broadcast of the Tournament Selection Show that begins at noon. Husky soccer supporters are invited to join the team beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Varlamos Pizzeria (3617 N.E. 45th) which is located near the Washington campus.
Seeking their sixth NCAA Tournament invitation in the last eight years, the Huskies may be chosen to host a four-team regional. If Washington is selected to host games at Husky Soccer Field there would be a first-round doubleheader on Friday, Nov. 16 beginning at 2 p.m. The Huskies would play in the second game of the twin bill at 4:30 p.m. A single second-round game would be played on Sunday, Nov. 18 at noon.
