UCLA Men's Soccer Rallies To Defeat Washington, 3-2, In Overtime
Nov. 11, 2001
Los Angeles, Calif. - The UCLA men's soccer team came from behind twice to defeat 10th-ranked Washington, 3-2, in overtime during the Bruins' regular season finale at Frank W. Marshall Field. The Bruins end the regular season with a six-game unbeaten streak.
UCLA made its first comeback in the first half. After a Bryn Ritchie goal in the 13th minute gave Washington a 1-0 lead, Tim Pierce came off the bench in the 29th minute and scored the equalizer just one minute later, following through on a Matt Taylor shot that was blocked by Husky goalkeeper Chad Olsen. The goal was his team-best seventh of the year.
Washington took the lead again in the 39th minute when Seth Marsh scored off a free kick and looked to win their sixth consecutive against the Bruins until UCLA earned a free kick in the 88th minute. Adolfo Gregorio took the free kick and lofted it to Taylor in the left corner of the goal box. With his back to the goal, Taylor unleashed a bicycle kick past Olsen to tie the game and send it to overtime.
'The bottom line is that the guys showed a lot of heart and put all of their emotions into coming back into the game,' said UCLA head coach Todd Saldana.
UCLA's record improves to 10-6-4, 5-2-1 in the Pac-10. Washington falls to 12-4-0, 3-3-0. The Bruins will await their post-season fate while the Huskies will finish out their Pac-10 schedule next week.
