Women's Basketball Signs Four To National Letters-Of-Intent

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford Women's Basketball program has announced the signing of four athletes - Clare Bodensteiner (Rupert, ID/Minico HS), Shelley Nweke (Marietta, GA/Marietta HS), Eziamaka Okafor (Rolla, MO/Rolla HS) and Krista Rappahahn (Lebanon, CT/Norwich Free Academy) - to National Letters-of-Intent beginning with the 2002-03 season.

'I'm very excited about these four signees,' Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer said. 'This is an excellent class and it will compliment the two great recruiting classes ahead of them. The class has excellent size, athleticism and skill.'

The Stanford Women's Basketball program has won two NCAA titles (1990, '92), made six NCAA Final Four appearances (1990, '91, '92, '95, '96, '97 - more than any school in the 1990's), captured 10 Pacific-10 Conference titles (1989, '90, '91, '92, '93, '95, '96, '97, '98, 2000) and made 14 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. The Cardinal enters its 2001-02 regular season ranked ninth in the nation by both the Associated Press and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, and returns 10 letterwinners from last year's squad that went 19-11, won the Pac-10 title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Stanford has five seniors on its roster this season - forward/center Bethany Donaphin, center Cori Enghusen, guard Enjoli Izidor, guard/forward Lauren St. Clair and guard/forward Lindsey Yamasaki.

Clare Bodensteiner 5-8 Guard Rupert, ID Minico HS

As a junior, averaged 15.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.4 steals to lead Minico to its first conference championship in 18 years ... First Team All-Idaho and first team all-conference pick as a junior ... Named a 2001 BCI Summer All-American ... In her sophomore season, averaged 11.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.1 steals and 3.3 assists en route to second team all-conference recognition ... Named honorable mention all-conference as a freshman ... High school basketball coach is Clint Straatman ... In track, member of 4x100 relay team that won the 2000 Idaho State Championship ... Also a three-year starter in soccer and two-year starter in volleyball ... Member of the National Honor Society.

'I felt extremely comfortable with the (Stanford) team,' Bodensteiner said. 'The kind of talent they have is top notch. The coaching staff is one of the best in the country, and I know they will make me into the best basketball player I can be. Stanford also has one of the best academic reputations in the country. Stanford just has it all.'

'Clare is an outstanding point guard,' VanDerveer said. 'She has excellent speed, court sense, and shooting and passing skills. She is an intense competitor and has a take charge attitude.'

Shelley Nweke 6-5 Center Marietta, GA Marietta HS

Invitee to the Adidas Top Ten Camp ... Averaged 12 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots per game in her junior season ... In one game alone, recorded a triple-double that included 14 blocked shots ... Named Marietta Daily Journal Player of the Week ... Cobb County 'Team of the Month' selection ... Named to the Cobb County All-Academic Team ... Member of the National Honor Society ... High school coach is Ken Sprague Jr.

'Before ever setting a foot on the campus, I knew that's where I wanted to be,' Nweke said. 'What other school has that kind of combination of sports and academics?'

'Shelley has great size and is a very aggressive player inside,' VanDerveer said. 'She is a solid low block scorer and defender.'

Eziamaka Okafor 6-0 Forward Rolla, MO Rolla HS

Street & Smith's 2001 Honorable Mention Preseason All-American ... Attended the 2001 Nike All-American Camp ... A 2001 Junior National All-American ... Led her AAU team to a third place finish at the 2001 Under-18 National Championships ... As just a junior, broke the Rolla High School career scoring record of 1,277 points ... Averaged 22.6 points, 10.6 rebounds and 4.1 steals as a junior ... Led Rolla to a 26-2 record a sophomore, and averaged 23.6 points, 10.9 rebounds and 3.9 steals ... USA Today Honorable Mention All-American and First Team All-Missouri as a sophomore ... Named Mid-Missouri Conference MVP ... Averaged 15.9 points, 11.6 boards and 4.0 steals as a freshman en route to Honorable Mention All-Missouri honors ... High school basketball coach is Sam Potter ... Also an accomplished high school athlete in both track and volleyball ... Named All-Missouri and two-time all-conference in volleyball ... In track, is the two-time Missouri State Girls Class 4A Triple Jump Champion (2000 & 2001) and finished in the top four in the state in long jump for three consecutive years (1999-2001) ... Member of the National Honor Society and Future Medics of America ... Career goals are to play in the WNBA and become a medical doctor with her own clinic.

'I chose Stanford because it has the best combination of academics and athletics,' Okafor said. 'I love the coaches, the team and the campus environment.'

'Eziamaka is a strong athlete,' VanDerveer said. 'She can rebound, block shots and defend. She is very athletic and very competitive.'

Krista Rappahahn 5-11 Guard Lebanon, CT Norwich Free Academy

Street & Smith's 2001 Honorable Mention Preseason All-American ... Attended the 2001 Nike All-American Camp ... McDonald's All-American nominee ... As a junior, was named a Street & Smith's Honorable Mention All-American and Student Sports Junior All-American after averaging 22.9 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 3.0 assists ... Also that season, guided the Norwich Free Academy to a 27-0 record and a top 25 national ranking by USA Today ... Also a consensus All-Connecticut pick by the Hartford Courant, ESPN and the New Haven Register ... As a sophomore, averaged 18.3 points and 7.0 rebounds en route to Second Team All-Connecticut honors from the New Haven Register ... An Honorable Mention All-Connecticut honoree by USA Today ... Averaged 13.1 points as the Norwich Free Academy went 27-0 in her freshman season and won the state championship ... Named Honorable Mention All-Connecticut ... High school coach is William Scarlata ... Also a three-year varsity soccer player, and a 2001 team tri-captain ...
