Women's Golf Inks Two Recruits in Early Signing Period
Nov. 14, 2001
TUCSON, Ariz. - Junior golf All-Americans Erica Blasberg (Corona, Calif./Corona HS) and Whitney Welch (Las Vegas, Nev./Durango HS) have signed National Letters-of-Intent to attend the University of Arizona in the fall of 2002, women's golf head coach Greg Allen announced Wednesday.
Welch was recently named to the American Junior Golf Association's All-America first-team in 2001 and won honorable mention honors in 2000. Blasberg has been honored as an All-American by the AJGA three consecutive years, winning first-team honors in 2000 and second-team honors in 2001 and 1999.
'Whitney and Erica are both big-time players who have had tremendous success in the junior ranks,' Allen said of the lauded recruits. 'We are excited about both of them coming in and having an immediate impact on the college level.'
Blasberg is currently ranked 11th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index junior rankings. Her junior career saw her place in the top 10 on 19 occasions, including three wins. This summer, Blasberg took third place at the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions.
Welch stands at No. 3 in the latest edition of the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index junior rankings. Welch's 2001 season included a victory at the AJGA Arizona Junior Classic and a runner-up finish at the U.S. Girls Junior Championship. In 2000, she won the Arizona Silver Belle Championship.
'Getting just Erica or just Whitney would have made this recruiting period a success,' Allen said. 'But signing both of them solidifies this class as one of the best in the country.'
Arizona recently completed its fall schedule with a fourth place finish at the Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational and is out of action until opening the spring season at the TRW Regional Challenge on Feb. 11.
