Men's, Women's Swimming, Diving At Arizona, ASU

Nov. 15, 2001

The USC men's and women's swimming and diving teams continue the 2002 dual meet season when they compete at Pac-10 rivals Arizona on Friday (Nov. 16) and Arizona State on Saturday (Nov. 17). Troy takes on the Wildcats on Friday at 1 p.m. in Tucson and then travels to Tempe to swim against the Sun Devils at noon.

The USC men's team opened at No. 4 in the 2002 College Swimming Coaches Association of America Top 25 while the women's team debuted at No. 6. The Arizona women are No. 5 and the men are No. 7. Both the ASU men's and women's teams are No. 13.

The Women of Troy opened the season with a solid win over No. 4 Texas on Oct. 27 in Los Angeles, 164-135. Junior Michala Kwasny led USC that day with wins in the 200y fly, 200y breast and 200y IM. Her time of 1:58.25 in the fly was an NCAA automatic and her 2:01.05 in the IM was one hundredth of a second away from being automatic.

Senior Katie Meyer posted a pair of wins that day, sweeping the 100y and 200y back events. Sophomore diver Nicci Fusaro and freshman diver Blythe Hartley split the diving wins, taking the 3-meter and 1-meter springboards, respectively.

The men's team was edged by No. 2 Texas, 161-151. USC enjoyed a 151-129 lead over the Longhorns, but because USC's divers were injured, Texas swept the points in the springboard events and won the meet. Junior Erik Vendt won the 400y IM and the 1650y free while senior Tamas Kerekjarto was first in the 200y fly and the 200y IM.

The Arizona teams opened their seasons by defeating sweeping Wisconsin on Nov. 2. The men's side won, 149-129, while the women posted a 163-119 win. The men were led in the pool by freshman Aram Kevorkian, who won both the 500y and 1000y free. For the women, both Beth Botsford and Emily Mason had three wins apiece.

The Arizona State men and women both enter the weekend 2-0 and have also posted wins over Wisconsin.
