Three Bruins To Compete At Reese's Gymnastics Cup
Nov. 15, 2001
The Reese's Cup is an entertainment-style mixed pairs competition. Pairings will be announced the day before the competition. Each gymnast will compete on two events. Dantzscher and Tousek will compete on bars and floor. Bhardwaj is expected to compete on bars and beam.
Dantzscher, a 2000 Olympian, is a three-time All-American for the Bruins and the 2001 Pac-10 floor exercise champion. She set numerous records at UCLA her freshman year, scoring seven perfect 10s, including two in her first collegiate meet.
Tousek, a 1996 and 2000 Olympian from Canada, earned a UCLA freshman record four All-America honors last season and captured the NCAA uneven bars championship.
Bhardwaj won two NCAA individual championships (2001 floor exercise, 2000 uneven bars) and earned 11 All-America honors during her four-year career. The 2001 Honda Award winner placed first on vault and third in the all-around at the U.S. Championships this year and helped the U.S. team win the bronze medal at the World Championships.
Joining the Bruin trio in the competition are Olympic medalists Svetlana Khorkina, Shannon Miller, Elena Produnova, along with World bronze medalist Tasha Schwikert and former Oregon State All-American Chari Knight-Hunter. On the men's side, Olympic medalists Alexei Nemov and Jordan Jovtchev, as well as U.S. Olympians Sean Townsend, Paul Hamm, Steve McCain, John Roethlisberger, John Macready and Lance Ringnald, are scheduled to compete.
'We at UCLA feel that our commitment to our student-athletes is to help them fulfill all of their goals and dreams, not just those that come from competing for UCLA,' said UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field. 'Jamie, Yvonne and Mohini are excited about participating in the Reese's Cup and performing gymnastics in a more relaxed setting. I think it's great for them to experience doing gymnastics for the pure enjoyment of 'performance' instead of always going for 'the score'.'
The Reese's Cup will be televised on NBC on December 9. Check your local listings for air time.
