Nov. 15, 2001

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of Oregon volleyball team lost 30-23, 30-18, 30-22 to No. 12 UCLA in front of 372 fans at Pauley Pavilion Thursday evening. Oregon is 9-18 overall, 0-15 Pac-10 and the Bruins improved to 16-7, 10-5.

The Bruins outkilled Oregon 39-24 and had the advantage in digs (44-28) and service aces (10-7). The Ducks were led by senior Monique Tobbagi, who had eight kills and six digs. UCLA was led by Ashley Bowles and Lauren Fendrick, who had 14 and 13 kills, respectively.

Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira showed a new line-up, with junior middle blocker Stephanie Martin playing outside and freshman Alisa Nelson starting at middle blocker.

'We tried something different to increase our chance to score points,' Ferreira said. 'That change got us out of sync and we struggled to score points.'

Setter Julie Gerlach served an ace in game one to give the Ducks and early lead, but the Bruins used an 8-0 run - that included four service aces by Bowles - to take a secure lead. Oregon pulled within three points, 9-6, with an ace by sophomore Lindsay Murphy, but Oregon never got closer.

In game two, junior Lindsay Closs gave Oregon its biggest lead, 8-6, with her 23rd service ace of the season. Bowles scored three-straight points for UCLA to give the Bruins a 12-9 lead and UCLA used a 18-9 run to close out the game.

Oregon continues play against No. 5 USC tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
