Men's Soccer Hangs on to Beat Oregon State, 2-1
Nov. 16, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - California (10-7-1, 3-4) kept its postseason hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over Oregon State (5-11-1, 1-6) Friday afternoon at Lorenz Field.
The Golden Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held on for its 10th win of the season, guaranteeing Cal its first winning season under head coach Kevin Grimes.
OSU made a late run to stay in the game, but fell short. Ben Roth scored his first goal in the 87th minute to cut the Bears' lead to 2-1. However, the Beavers could get no closer.
Cal is still on the postseason 'bubble' with a game remaining at 10th-ranked Washington Sunday afternoon, but with Friday's win, the Bears went a long way in boosting their NCAA Tournament hopes.
'This was a great win for our team,' said Grimes. 'We battled through some very difficult elements. It was a rainy afternoon and the field wasn't in the best condition, but the players scored early and kept up the pressure the entire game.'
After starting the season 1-3, the Bears are 9-4-1 in their last 14 games with Cal's only losses coming against powerhouses UCLA and Stanford.
'We're extremely happy about getting our 10th win of the season and look forward to Sunday's game against another top-rated team on our schedule in Washington,' Grimes said.
Cal wraps up the regular season when it faces the Huskies Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Husky Soccer Field.
