UCLA Faces Loyola Marymount In NCAA Men's Soccer First Round
Nov. 19, 2001
The UCLA men's soccer team will face Loyola Marymount in the first round of the NCAA Championships at the University of San Diego on Friday, Nov. 23. The game will take place at Torero Stadium at 7:00 pm. The winner of the first round game will then face San Diego (12-3-1) in the second round on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 1:00 pm, also at Torero Stadium.
The Bruins (10-6-4) received an at-large bid into the tournament, extending their streak to 19 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. The Lions (9-6-2) advanced for the first time in school history.
'It feels like we have a second chance,' said UCLA head coach Todd Saldana. 'We got in the tournament, and now we get a chance to play Loyola Marymount and possibly San Diego, two teams who had beaten us this season. When we played them earlier, it was a period when we were struggling, but now we're at a point where we're playing our best soccer. Our confidence is high, and the team is not afraid of anybody at this point.'
UCLA and LMU faced each other in Westwood Sept. 30, with the Lions winning, 1-0. Coincidentally, the Bruins faced San Diego in their next game at Torero Stadium. San Diego won, 3-0.
UCLA and San Diego have met in the NCAA tournament the last two years. UCLA won in 1999, 4-1, and San Diego won 1-0 in overtime in 2000.
