No. 7 Stanford Stomps Minnesota, 96-65

HONOLULU - Nicole Powell had 19 points and eight rebounds to leadseventh-ranked Stanford over Minnesota 96-65 in the first round of the RainbowWahine Classic on Friday night.

Lindsey Yamasaki added 17 points, while N'Tae Thiel had 14 for the Cardinal(3-0).

Stanford blew the game open by going on a 17-2 run capped by a 10-footjumper by Thiel to take a 66-40 lead with 12:51 left in the game.

Azella Perryman's layup with 6:09 left gave Stanford its largest lead at84-49.

Stanford took advantage of 15 Minnesota turnovers in the first half to takea 46-32 lead into the locker room. Powell led all players with 13 points at thebreak.

Janel McCarville led the Golden Gophers (2-1) with 19 points and eightrebounds, while Lindsay Whalen added 13 points.

The Cardinal are continuing their success in the islands, having won 11 oftheir 12 games in Hawaii. Stanford won this tournament in 1996.
