Dirk Koetter's Weekly Press Conference Quotes

Nov. 26, 2001

Opening Statement
'Let me just start off by saying we have one game left with UCLA, and I'm not going to make any comments today about the future of Arizona State football, because I don't think that's fair to our current players, and to our seniors. I'll make any comments about the future after the UCLA game.'

'In regard to the Arizona game, it's embarrassing for all of us, the way we played, and what happened at the end. Trust me, nobody feels worse about it than the players and the coaches do. We got off to a horrible start, we finished poorly in the fourth quarter, and you know what happened after the game has no place in college football. All we can do is improve from there.'

'This is kind of a different type of week because the first day of the recruiting period was yesterday. I recruited myself locally all day yesterday. We have seven coaches on the road recruiting today. Those guys will be returning to town tonight, we'll practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the coaches will go back to the road Thursday night, recruit Thursday and Friday, and meet us at the hotel Friday night.'

'In essence, every team that plays a game this week is losing one of the three weeks we have of recruiting before Christmas. We do have two big recruiting weekends on December 7 and December 14, there will be a lot of guys in town and those will be our major weekends of the season.'

'I'm not sure exactly what Jeff (Krohn)'s health status is, but Andrew Walter will definitely play some quarterback in this game. Whether he'll start or not, we still haven't made that decision. Andrew I'm sure will get plenty of playing time.'

On the altercation following the game
'I really don't know everything that happened. Anybody that could say they could single out one or two guys that were at fault, I think it would be difficult to do that. It's embarrassing for our team, but we do have some members there that were trying to protect other members of our team. Some of the things that happened there were totally classless by both sides, and again there is no place for it. I don't have time to go get a TV copy of the tape and go review player by player and see who needs to be punished and who doesn't. I had some players on our team, after the game waiting for me, to apologize for their role in it. I realize that their part was wrong, but I don't plan anything further at this point.'

On staying motivated for this last game
'Anytime you are a coming off a loss, especially a loss to your rival the way we played, and when you still have a game left, on the outside everybody says you have nothing to play for. Do we have guys that are not going to show up with 100%? I'm sure both teams do. But, my approach with the team is a very honest one. When you get to be our age, and you don't compete any more in your life, you get to look back and say you had so many opportunities in your whole life when you get to compete, when you lay it on the line. I'm a firm believer that you are either a competitor or your not. Competitors will show up on Saturday at the Rose Bowl and play, and non-competitors won't.'

On getting back in the game vs. Arizona
'We had many chances to get back in that game. We had two opportunities in the first half, where we had the ball inside their 35 yard line. An interception on the halfback pass, which is in no way Tom Pace's fault, that's on me. We fumbled the other time we are down there. We come out in the second half, Delvon (Flowers) runs it in there, it's 20-14, we have two more possessions after that where we have opportunities to score and take the lead, and who knows what happens from there. Arizona deserved to beat us, and we didn't deserve to beat them on that day, and we will just have to move on.'
