Arizona Swimming Heads to Texas for Invitational

This Week's Schedule: The fifth ranked Arizona women's swimming and diving team and the eighth ranked men will be traveling to Austin, Texas for the Texas Invitational this weekend. The three-day event will take place at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on the University of Texas campus.

The Cats Last Outing: The eighth ranked Arizona men defeated the fourth ranked USC men by one point on Nov. 16, 122-121. The meet came down to the last event as Arizona edged past USC to claim second place in the 400y free relay (3:00.50) and to win the meet. The No. 5 Wildcat women upset the No. 3 Trojan women with a final score of 140-104. In his first meet of the 2001-02 season senior All-American Roland Schoeman won the 50y free with a NCAA consideration time of 20.09. Also making a NCAA consideration time was the second place 400y free relay team made up of sophomore Eric la Fleur, Schoeman, freshman Max Leassner and sophomore Tyler Johnson (3:00.50). On the women's side of the event senior All-American Sarah Tolar made two NCAA consideration times in the 200y free (1:47.86) and the 100y free (50.37). The Cats took the one, two finish in three events against hte Trojans. The 200y free with Tolar and freshman Jessica Hayes (1:49.40), the 50y free with senior Jenny Vanker (23.74) and senior transfer Lindsey Highstrom (24.24) and the 400y free relay. The first place relay team consisted of Hayes, Vanker, Highstrom and freshman Artemis Daphnis (3:27.20), while the second place relay team was made up of senior Amy Bouta, junior Annie Joseph and seniors Jamie Krohn and Katie Zimbone (3:35.22). The University of Arizona women's swimming and diving teams placed first in 12 out of 13 events against UCLA on Nove. 17. With their 138-99 victory over the Bruins the Wildcats are now 3-0 on the season. The 200y medley relay team of All-American junior Beth Botsford, sophomore Jessica Wagner, All-American senior Amy Bouta and sophomore Kristen Brennan clocked a 1:42.48 finish, beating the Bruins by almost four seconds. The Cats' 200y free relay team (senior Jenny Vanker, senior Sarah Tolar, freshman Jessica Hayes, senior Lindsey Highstrom) swam to a new top-time for the 2001-02 season as the final leg of the relay touched the wall at 1:34.25.

The Newest Members of the Wildcats Squad: This year the Cats welcome eight new women on the team and six new men. On the women's side there are two transfer students in Lindsey Highstrom and April Martin. Highstrom comes to the Cats fromand backstroke events. Six freshman will join the women's ranks, four swimmers and two divers. For the Arizona men, all six newcomers are freshman swimmers. These men will add depth in the IM, freestyle and breastsroke events.

The Wildcats Next Outing: The Arizona men'a and women's swimming teams will travel to Austin, Texas to partake in the Texas Invitational from Nov. 30 - Dec. 2. The event will take place at the Joe and Lee Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
