No. 6 Cal Men's and Women's Swimmers Shine at Texas Invite

AUSTIN, TX - Both the No. 6 ranked Cal men's and women's swim teams had some impressive performances in the first evening of the Texas Invitational in Austin, TX.
On the women's side, sophomore standout Natalie Coughlin won the 50 free with a time of 22.21 (NCAA automatic), breaking the Cal school record of 22.32 set by Haley Cope last season and the meet record of 22.36 set by Olympian Amy Van Dyken in 1993. Coughlin also won the 100 fly with an NCAA automatic time of 51.22.
Other highlights for the Bear women included the 200 free relay team of sophomore Danielle Becks, Coughlin, freshman Emma Palsson and junior Michelle Harper placing second with an NCAA consideration time of 1:32.06. Cal's 400 medley relay team of senior Alice Henriques, junior Staciana Stitts, Coughlin and Becks placed third with an NCAA automatic mark of 3:38.55.
Individually for the Cal women, sophomore Kyoko Yokouchi placed ninth (2:02.13 NCAA consideration) and sophomore Natalie Griffith placed 13th (2:04.26 NCAA consideration) in the 200 IM. Henriques finished 17th but had an NCAA consideration time in the 100 fly (55.51), and junior Ashley Whitney was 17th and had an NCAA consideration time in the 500 free (4:51.30).
On the men's side, sophomore Alex Lim captured the 100 fly title with an NCAA consideration time of 47.43. Senior teammate Mattias Ohlin placed 11th in the 100 fly and also had an NCAA consideration time with a mark of 48.71.
Freshman standout sprinter Duje Draganja placed fifth in the 50 free with an NCAA consideration time of 20.30 (swam 20.24 in the prelims) and senior Bayani Flores was sixth in the 200 IM (1:49.92 NCAA consideration, 1:48.41 in prelims).
In the relays, Cal placed fourth in the 400 medley relay (3:15.10 NCAA consideration, Lim, senior Peter Aronsson, Ohlin, Draganja) and seventh in the 200 free relay (1:21.62, senior Matt Macedo, Flores, junior Joe Bruckart, Draganja). The Bears also placed eighth in the 200 free relay (1:23.01, senior Maciej Burny, Ohlin, Lim, sophomore Matt Messmer).
