Softball Signs Two California Prep Standouts

Dec. 3, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Adrienne Alo of Torrance, CA, and Vanessa Iapala of San Diego, CA, have signed letters of intent to play for Oregon State University's softball team in 2003, announced Beaver head coach Kirk Walker on Monday.

Alo will join OSU next season after graduating from Carson High School where she saw action in both the infield and outfield. Alo is a two-time first team all-area selection and two-time first team all-city pick. She is also a two-time member of the Long Beach Press-Telegram Dream Team and helped lead Carson High to back-to-back runner-up finishes in the Los Angeles City Championship during her freshman and sophomore seasons. A two-sport athlete, Alo is a three-year letterwinner in basketball and earned second team all-league honors as a freshman.

During the summer, Alo is a member of one of the top ASA programs in the country, competing with Gordon's Panthers for the past three years.

'Adrienne is an extremely gifted athlete and brings great power and athleticism to our program,' said Walker. 'She is an all around ball player that should start for us right away in the outfield.

'Adrienne is aggressive and powerful on defense, and her power and explosiveness at the plate should be exciting to watch. She has the potential to rewrite a lot of OSU hitting records and take our program to the next level.'

'Adrienne comes from a very athletic and very special family,' continued Walker. 'We look forward to adding her and her family to the OSU program.'

Iapala will come to Oregon State after graduating from Bonita Vista High School where she plays both catcher and first base. Iapala is a two-time second team All-CIF Division I selection and was named first team All-CIF in 1999. She is a two-time first team all-league pick and a two-year honor roll member. Iapala earned San Diego Union-Tribune All-Academic Team honors in 2001 and was named the San Diego Union-Tribune Athlete of the Month, for March 2001.

Iapala teamed with Alo last season on the Gordan's Panthers 18U Gold ASA squad. Iapala also competed four seasons for the California Cruisers, with her 18U squad earning ninth place at ASA nationals in 2000, and her 16U team winning the ASA National Championship in 1999.

'We are very excited to have Vanessa commit to OSU,' said Walker. 'We had recruited her through her junior year, and thought she was going to be committing to another institution.

'We had the opportunity to bring her on a visit late in the process and she absolutely loved campus, the team and the environment. She verbally committed on her trip and we knew that it was going to be a great fit for our program.

'Vanessa can play catcher or infield and is a tremendous hitter.'

Walker believes both Alo and Iapala will make an immediate impact on OSU's squad, which has made three consecutive trips to the NCAA Regional Tournament.

'Vanessa and Adrienne are both competing on one of the premier programs in the country and are used to competing for a national championship,' said Walker. 'That competitiveness and experience will help keep our program as a strong national contender.

'They are best friends and should help attract some great recruits in the near future.'
