Beavers Ranked 24th In Nation

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State was ranked 24th when the first National Wrestling Coaches Association poll of the season was released Wednesday, and OSU was second in the Pacific-10 conference team rankings. The Beavers (4-1 overall, 1-1 Pacific-10) had five wrestlers in the national rankings released by Amateur Wrestling News and InterMat, and seven OSU wrestlers were in the Pac-10 rankings.
In the preseason, Oregon State had been ranked 23rd by InterMat and was unranked by Amateur Wrestling News. The Beavers placed ninth at last weekend's Las Vegas Classic and are taking final exams this week.
OSU resumes its schedule Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts Oregon in the season's first Civil War, sponsored by Northwest Dodge Dealers. Oregon State will then go to ninth-ranked Nebraska on Dec. 14 before returning home to face second-ranked Oklahoma State on Dec. 16 at 1 p.m.
That string of dual meets will mark the season debut of OSU 174-pounder Nathan Coy, the highest-ranked wrestler in the Beaver lineup. Coy had been absent from OSU's first five duals and the Las Vegas Classic for personal reasons. This week, Coy is ranked fifth nationally by AWN and sixth by InterMat, he is ranked first in the Pac-10 and is the defending conference champion.
Nathan Navarro, 9-1 with one pin this season, is ranked No. 17 nationally by AWN and No. 16 by InterMat. In the Pac-10, Navarro is ranked third.
The Beavers have a pair of heavyweights ranked.
Jason Cooley, who missed the Southern Oregon Open and the season's first four dual meets recovering from an injury, is ranked No. 16 nationally by IM after losing to No. 15 Kellan Fluckiger of Arizona State in a dual meet last week. Andy Bowlby, who then wrestled in the Las Vegas Classic and placed fifth, is ranked No. 3 in the Pacific-10 with a 10-2 record and three pins.
Weber, 9-4 with one pin, is ranked No. 19 nationally by IM and is ranked second in the Pacific-10 after placing fifth at the Las Vegas Classic. At that tournament, Weber pinned then-No. 10-ranked Rob Rohn of Lehigh. Horn, 8-3 with five pins, is ranked No. 18 by AWN after placing fourth at the Las Vegas Classic.
Weber is ranked No. 2 in the Pacific-10 and Horn is ranked No. 3 in the conference.Two more OSU wrestlers are in the Pacific-10 rankings. Beaver 149-pounder Jordan Barich is ranked No. 3 with a 4-3 record and one pin, while 197-pounder Jason Lovell is ranked No. 3 with an 8-4 record and one pin.
Oregon State 165-pounder Jed Pennell dropped out of both the national and conference rankings, he is 6-2 with two pins this season.
