John Dunning Named AVCA Pacific Region Coach of the Year

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford women's volleyball head coach John Dunning was selected by the Pacfic Region as its Tachikara/AVCA Division I Region Coach of the Year. Dunning will represent the Pacific region on the National Coach of the Year ballot. The awards will be officially presented at the Tachikara/AVCA Coach of the Year banquet in San Diego on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at the American Volleyball Coaches Association National Convention.
Dunning was tabbed 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year last month and had guided the third-ranked Cardinal to a 29-2 mark overall and its ninth Pac-10 Championship.
Stanford will take on No. 13 Utah on Friday, December 7 at 7 p.m. in Maples Pavilion in regional action.

Coach/Team Bio: Coach Dunning has not skipped a beat in his first year as the head coach at Stanford University following a lengthy stay at Pacific. He led the Cardinal to the Pac-10 championship with a 17-1 league mark, while Stanford is 29-2 for the year. Stanford is 9-2 against teams currently ranked in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll, which includes wins over No. 4 Arizona (twice), No. 5 USC, No. 9 Colorado State, No. 12 Pacific, No. 14 UCLA (twice), No. 15 Texas A&M, No. 17 Penn State and Santa Clara. The only two setbacks on the Cardinal schedule have been to #1 Long Beach State and USC. Dunning, the Pac-10 Conference Coach of the Year, has improved Stanford by 10 games already from 2000 heading into the NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinals.
