Diles Breaks Freshman Pole Vault Record at Long Beach

Dec. 10, 2001

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Washington State's Tamara Diles made her debut in a crimson uniform by winning the women's pole vault competition at the Winter Carnival outdoor exhibition track meet Saturday at Long Beach.

Diles, a freshman from Bellevue, Wash., cleared 13-feet, 2 1/4 inches (4.02m) in spite of running into a Santa Ana cross wind at the Jack Rose Track on the Long Beach State campus. She placed her name in the Cougar record book as the top freshman pole vaulter, eclipsing Karla McGee's height of 12-7 1/2 (3.85m), set last spring.

Washington State opens the 2002 indoor season January 12, at the Eastern Washington Early Bird Open, at Cheney.
