Trojans Trounce Long Beach State, 86-68

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Senior guard Brandon Granville had a career-high 25 points to lead the University of Southern California over Long Beach State 86-68 in a non-conference action Wednesday.

Using a tough full-court press, USC forced 16 turnovers and disrupted Long Beach State's offensive rhythm through much of the game, forcing the 49ers to take tough shots as the shot clock ran down.

'There are nights when it will work and nights when it won't.' said USC Coach Henry Bibby. 'We're not going to have a steady diet of it every night.'

The Trojans (5-2) also got 18 points from freshman guard Errick Craven and 16 points from senior forward Sam Clancy. Combined, USC went made 11 of 19 from the three-point line.

Long Beach State Coach Wayne Morgan said his team allowed to many three-point shots.

'Quite frankly, we have to improve. We can't hope people miss, we have to make them miss,' he said.

Long Beach State (3-5) was led by center James Williams with 16 points. Kevin Roberts came off the bench to score 15 points before fouling out with 3:26 to play.

The 49ers got as close as 41-34 after scoring the first bucket of the second half, but USC went on a 15-4 run to take a 56-39 lead with 13:52 left.
