Godina Leads Bruin Men On T & F In 2001 World/U.S. Rankings

UCLA great John Godina, who in 2001 won the Jesse Owens Award for the second time in his career, was ranked No. 1 in the world's shot put rankings, according to the Dec. 2001 issue of Track & Field News. The Dec. issue of T & FN highlighted the 2001 World and U. S. event-by-event rankings.The highest rated current Bruin was senior Scott Moser, who was No. 8 on the U. S. discus list.
Godina in 2001 in the shot put won the World Indoor (68-3 3/4), the World Outdoor (71-9) and the USA Outdoor championships. At season's end, Godina owned four of the Top Six shot put performances in the World. He is coached by Art Venegas, in his third season as the UCLA men's head track & field coach.
Along with being ranked No. 1 in the World in the shot put, Godina was also ranked No. 2 in the U. S. in the discus.
Also in the World rankings is former Bruin sprint great Ato Boldon, who is No. 3 on the World 100m chart.
Moser in 2001 earned two NCAA All-American honors by placing third at the NCAA Outdoor in the discus (197-4) and eighth (61-8 1/4) in the shot put at the NCAA Indoor. Moser also won the discus title (199-4) at the 2001 Pac-10 meet.
Other former Bruins on the 2001 U. S. lists included Mebrahtom Keflezighi, who set the American 10,000m record (27:13.98) on May 4 and world long jump record-holder Mike Powell, who returned to competition this year after several seasons of retirement. On the U. S. charts, Keflezighi is No. 3 in the 5000m and No. 2 in the 10,000m and Powell is No. 8 in the long jump.
