Matt Barnes Sprains Left Ankle; Out At Least A Week

UCLA senior starting forward Matt Barnes reaggravated his left ankleduring practice on Thursday and will miss at least a week, Bruin head coachSteve Lavin announced Thursday night.

Early in UCLA's practice on Thursday, during a drill, Barnes steppedon senior center Dan Gadzuric's foot and injured his left ankle (it's thesame ankle that caused Barnes some discomfort earlier this season). He thenwent to the UCLA Medical Center for x-rays, which were negative. Thediagnosis is a sprained left ankle and Barnes will be out at least sevendays.

Barnes, a 6-7, 235-pounder from Citrus Heights, has started all (six)of UCLA's games this season and is averaging 24.3 minutes, 9.5 points (No.4 on the team), 6.7 rebounds (No. 1), 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals. He'sshooting 43.9 (18-41) from the field, 37.5 (3-8) from three-point range and75.0 (18-24) from the foul line.

Lavin said he would probably wait until Saturday to determine thechange in UCLA's starting lineup. The Bruins, rated No. 17 this week by AP,will host UC Irvine on Saturday (Dec. 15) at 1 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.

UCLA's Pacific-10 openers are next week at the Washington schools(Thursday, Dec. 20, at Washington, 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 22, atWashington State, noon).
