Beavers Out-Muscled By Mustangs, 72-68

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) - Brandon Beeson led a balanced scoring attackwith 15 points and also had 13 rebounds Saturday night as Cal Poly-San LuisObispo beat Oregon State 72-68, the Mustangs' first win over a Pacific-10Conference school in 25 years.

Cal Poly, at home against a Pac-10 school for the first time, last beat ateam from that conference in 1976, a 79-61 victory over Stanford.

The Mustangs are 3-17 all-time against the Pac-10, and Saturday night's gamewas their first against Oregon State.

David Henry and Varnie Dennis had 16 points each for Cal Poly (5-2), whichended a four-game win streak by the Beavers (5-3). Jason Allen scored 12 pointsand had three steals for the Mustangs.

Philip Ricci led the Beavers with 23 points and 10 rebounds and Adam Mastenhad a career-high 19 points.

Cal Poly led 34-31 at halftime, but Oregon State took its first lead of thegame at 42-41 on Masten's putback with 15:40 remaining. Shortly later, theMustangs moved back in front to stay, with Jered Patterson's jumper capping an8-2 run for a 53-50 lead with 11 minutes remaining.

Dennis made two free throws to put Cal Poly up 64-57 with 6:28 to play, andOregon State got no closer than three points the rest of the way.

The Beavers shot 48 percent (24-of-50) from the floor to 40.3 percent(25-65) by the Mustangs, but Cal Poly held a 43-31 edge in rebounds.
