Volleyball's Dana Burkholder Nominated For Prestigious Honda Sports Award

TUCSON, Ariz.- Senior Dana Burkholder has been nominated for the prestigious Honda Sports Award presented to the top female volleyball player in the nation. Her nomination is the first such honor for any Arizona volleyball player in school history. Joining Burkholder on the list of nominees are Stanford's Logan Tom, Nebraska's Nancy Metcalf and Long Beach State's Cheryl Weaver.
Burkholder, who recently led Arizona to its first ever Final Four appearance, exhausted her eligibility on the volleyball floor as one of the most decorated players in school history. Along with being named the first Honda Sports Award nominee for Wildcat volleyball, she is also the only player ever to be named a two-time All-American and a three-time All-Region player. The three-time first-team All-Pac-10 setter finished her career at UA as the all-time leader in assists and assists per game and is second all-time in the Pac-10 conference in total assists and third at Arizona with a .310 hitting percentage.
The winner of the Volleyball Honda Sports Award, to be announced on Dec. 21, then becomes a candidate for the Honda-Brodrick Cup which is presented annually to the nation's outstanding Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year Award during the NACDA convention, which will be held in Dallas on June 17, 2002. Arizona's Tara Chaplin has already won the Honda Sports Award for the most outstanding women's cross country runner this season.
