Wrestling Heads To Reno Tournament Of Champions
Dec. 19, 2001
The University of Oregon wrestling team will take a break from dual action this week, heading to the Reno Tournament of Champions on Thursday.
Most recently, Oregon (2-2, overall, 2-1 Pac-10) lost a 16-16 decision to No. 25 Oregon State in Corvallis and fell 30-3 to No. 2 Oklahoma State at McArthur Court. Despite the 16-16 tie against the Beavers, Oregon State was awarded the win based on criteria g, which states that the team with the most near fall points wins the dual. Oregon State had two near fall points and Oregon had zero.
In the match against Oklahoma State, junior Brian Watson (141) picked up the lone win for the Ducks, a 3-2 decision over Ronnie Delk. Five other weight classes - 125, 133, 165, 175 and heavyweight - were decided by a single point.
Oregon is one of 15 teams competing in Reno, including No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Michigan, No. 13 Arizona State, No. 15 Missouri, No. 22 Central Michigan and No. 23 Penn State. Oregon has not been ranked in Intermat's Top 25 this season, but four individual wrestlers are ranked - No. 11 Shaun Williams (125), No. 17 Jason Harless (133), No. 11 Eugene Harris (165) and No. 12 Eric Webb (Hwt.). Harless will not make the trip to Reno because of injury and freshman Martin Mitchell will wrestle at 133.
Oregon's line up is as follows: Williams (125), Mitchell (133), Watson (141), Casey Hunt (149), Tony Overstake (157), Harris (165), Shane Webster (174), Elias Soto (184), Jake Leair (197) and Webb (Hwt.).
