Women's Basketball Opens Pac-10 With 69-65 Win Over Oregon State

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- With her second consecutive 20-point performance, senior guard Tiffany Elmore led the USC women's basketball team to its first Pac-10 win of the season with a 69-65 decision over Oregon State on Thursday, Dec. 20, in front of 452 at the L.A. Sports Arena. With the win the Women of Troy improve to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Beavers fall to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in the Pac-10.
Elmore, who was 9-of-12 against Nevada on Saturday (Dec. 15), hit 9-of-13 tonight and has averaged a 72.0 shooting percentage in the last two outings.
Oregon State trailed at the start, but a layup by OSU freshman Juleen Smith soon tied the score at 17 apiece (8:19). It was a close battle throughout as the teams entered halftime knotted at 34-34.
Neither team led by more than six points in the game. USC took the largest lead, 52-46 at the 10:20 mark, thanks to an eight-point swing fueled by a two-pointer by Elmore and four points by Ebony Hoffman.
Following five lead changes and another tied score at 57-57, the Women of Troy took the lead for good when point guard Jessica Cheeks buried a three-pointer with 4:15 remaining to give USC a 60-59 advantage. Elmore followed with a layup and a jumper seconds later to give USC a 64-59 cushion with 3:31 left on the clock.
The Beavers managed to come as close as 64-63 at 2:06, but could not get past the Trojans in the final minutes.
Smith led the Beavers with 22 points in the game.
USC had three players finish in double figures -- Elmore, Hoffman (14 points, seven rebounds) and freshman Rachel Woodward (11 points).
The Women of Troy host Oregon on Saturday, Dec. 22, at 4 p.m. at the Sports Arena. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports West 2 and broadcast via the internet at www.usctrojans.com.
