Assistant Women's Basketball Coach Resigns
Dec. 21, 2001
Tucson, Ariz. (Dec. 21) - Citing personal family reasons as the cause, assistant women's basketball coach Karen Caires has resigned from her position at the University of Arizona, effective immediately.
'Karen's resignation came as a big surprise to us, but we want her to do what's best for herself, and we have only her best interests in our hearts,' said 11th-year head coach Joan Bonvicini. 'We're very grateful for everything Karen has given to this program over the last four seasons, and we wish her well in her future endeavors.'
Caires joined the Wildcat program as a third assistant in the summer of 1998 and was promoted to the role of a recruiting assistant during the summer of 1999. She came to Arizona from Oregon State, where she had served for one year as an assistant coach after a three-year stint at the University of Vermont.
Caires' responsibilities at Arizona included coordinating the Wildcat defense, instructing the guards and assisting with scouting, recruiting and academic monitoring of the student-athletes.
Bonvicini will begin the search for a replacement after the team's holiday break.
