Oregon State Bests WSU 57-33

Dec. 28, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Washington State's Brittney Hawks continued her double-double run with 13 points and a career-high 19 rebounds in the Cougars' 57-33 loss to the Oregon State Beavers in Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball action at Gill Coliseum, Friday night.

Hawks' effort was the sixth consecutive and Pac-10 Conference leading eighth double-double this season for the senior from Rexburg, Idaho. Not only did the 19 rebounds set a career standard for Hawks but it also was a Pac-10 conference best this season.

Oregon State's Felicia Ragland, who entered the game as the Pac-10's leading scorer with a 21.5 points a game average, was held in check but still recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Brina Chaney also posted a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Beavers.

Both teams found the basket a tough target to find throughout the game but especially in the second half.

The Cougars shot 12-of-69 (17.4 percent) from the floor and 5-of-42 (11.9 percent) in the second half. Oregon State converted 13-of-35 attempts (37.1 percent) for the game and shot 9-of-34 (26.5 percent) in the second half.

WSU jumped out to a 5-2 advantage 3:53 into the contest as Oregon State struggled from the floor making one of its first eight shots.

Oregon State would find its stroke after a timeout as the team went on a 10-0 run over a 3:13 span to take a 12-5 lead at the 12:54 mark. During the run, the Cougars committed five turnovers.

The Cougars' Francine McCurtain ended the Beavers' run with a trey that sparked a 7-2 outburst by WSU, slicing OSU's advantage to 14-12 with 10:34 remaining in the first half.

However, the Beavers would outscore the Cougars 17-4 over the remainder of the half to take a 31-16 lead into the intermission.

Oregon State continued its run by scoring the first four points of the second half to extend its advantage to 35-16 at the 17:55 mark of the second half.

The Cougars managed to pull to within 11 at 44-33 on a Hawks' bucket with 7:33 remaining. That would be the last points the Cougars would score for the remainder of the game, however, as the Beavers concluded the game with a 13-0 run.

WSU returns to action, Sunday, Dec. 30 at Oregon. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
