Men's Basketball Press Conference Quotes
ON HAVING TO PLAY CALIFORNIA IN CONSECUTIVE GAMES:
'We could have found a date and played Cal a week ago versus back-to-back. However they had their own tournament commitment and with the Pete Newell Challenge and other things, it just didn't work out. We had our commitment to the tournaments in Las Vegas and Indianapolis, so this turned out to the best way. Conference play took a week away from us because of tournaments, so everything had to be moved up to December.'
'If someone is hurt, that might be a little different but it's the same as any other game. If you consider the Cal game more important than another game- which I personally do not- because they are all conference games and you need to get as many wins as you can. I think the only advantage is that if you lose the first one, then one team is down and one team is up. Or you get one team that is hungry and has their backs against the wall, while the other is going for the sweep. We were fortunate to just have the one game to move, while other schools have two. A young team might mature better at the end of the season after they have had a chance to grow, but we would have been playing two games this week anyway.'
TALKING ABOUT THE PAC-10 TOURNAMENT AND POSTSEASON:
'I don't think the fourth place team in our league is guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Tournament, and that's dicey. I would think that three teams in our league would make it and if you can avoid being fourth or fifth, it's to your advantage. If there is an upset in another conference tournament, then that takes the place of a spot you may have gotten. I think probably in any given year you could say that six teams in our league would be in the top 64 nationally, but that doesn't mean they're going to be selected to be in the tournament.'
ON THE RECENT STRONG PLAY OF CURTIS BORCHARDT:
'He's been able to get over the top lately and get some boards. If opponents double him or use a second defender on him, than he won't pick up as many boards but someone else will because they will be open. That's what the Collins (Jason and Jarron) kids gave us because people would double them and others get easier shots.'
ON THE STRENGTH OF THE PAC-10 THIS SEASON:
'The conference has more balance than in recent years. I think UCLA potentially, but there is not a top-10 team this season. However, we do have three teams in the top-20. Cal and USC could be better than the three teams ranked right now. In the past we've had a few two or three teams ranked in the top-10 and some separation, but it appears more scattered this year.'
DISCUSSING THE TEAM MOOD AFTER THE WIN AGAINST MICHIGAN STATE:
'I think that when you coach college kids, it's an ongoing process of them understanding their mental preparation for a game and how that effects them. After we played Michigan State they might have been a little more tired, but they were able to track down some loose balls and hustled and made some plays. But the next game won't be the same, so it's always a little bit different. I think they have a little more knowledge about themselves and how they have to prepare themselves for a game.'
ON THE RIVALRY ELEMENT BETWEEN STANFORD AND CAL:
'We've had a great relationship with Cal. We have two games every year and personally I prefer it that way. I think too much pressure can get placed on one game- I've seen too many people lose jobs or get too excited. This is a good rivalry but it won't change. If the first game is a hard-fought game, then Sunday's game will be a little more interesting because of that.'
ON THE PLAY OF JOSH CHILDRESS:
'I think there's a lot of good basketball left for Josh. He just needs to get back to being more confident and aggressive. Confidence is a big deal with him, he needs to get some shots. He'll have a real good year once he gets a couple of good games under his belt.'
