Australian Standout Joins Women's Basketball Team

Seattle, Wash. - Australian high school standout Nicole Castro has joined the Washington women's basketball team, sixth-year head coach June Daugherty announced Thursday.

After graduating from St. John's College High School in Nambour, Australia in November, Castro has enrolled at Washington and is expected to redshirt the remainder of the 2001-02 season. She joined the Huskies at practiceJan. 2.

'Nicole is an athletic and versatile guard,' says Daugherty. 'Obviously with her graduation in November she is not on the traditional season, but we look forward to getting her in here to learn our system. She has great speed and the ability to shoot the three. Nicole already has a great deal of experience playing with the junior program in Australia and will be an integral part of the Husky program.'

Castro, a 5-foot-10 guard, was selected to the Adidas All-Star Camp in both 1999 and 2000. Along with being named the 2001 Southern Cross Women's League Player of the Year, Castro was chosen to the league's all-star team in 2000. She was presented the Queensland Academy of Sports Commitment to Excellence award in 1999.

Other accolades that Castro amassed during her prep career include the 1999 Maroochydore Basketball Club Highest Achiever award, along with being named to the 1999 and 2000 All-Australian Reserves.

The Washington women's basketball team continues Pac-10 play against UCLA Fri., Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Bank of America Arena and again Sun., Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. versus USC.
