Hot-shooting Huskies Torch UCLA, 86-53 for Third Pac-10 Win
Jan. 4, 2002
SEATTLE, Wash. - Junior guard Loree Payne tonight became just the 17th player in Washington women's basketball history with over 1,000 career points, leading the hot-shooting Huskies to a 86-53 win over UCLA before 3,077 fans at Bank of America Arena.
Freshman Kayla Burt - who entered the game with just 14 points in the Huskies' first 12 games - led all scorers with 18 on seven-of-11 shooting, including three three-pointers. Fellow frosh Kristen O'Neill (13) and Sarah Keeler (12) each set or equaled career-highs as well, while Payne (15) and junior Kellie O'Neill (10) joined the freshman trio in double-figure scoring.
Senior center Shalada Allen led the Bruins with 16 points.
Payne's 1000th point came on the front end of a trip to the free-throw line and extended the Huskies' lead to 76-47 at the 5:17 mark of the second half.
'I am very happy for Loree,' said sixth-year head coach June Daugherty. 'I was surprised that she scored No. 1000 on a free throw - knowing Loree, I would have expected her to do it on a three-pointer.'
Payne's accomplishment contrasted a dominant defensive effort by Washington, which recorded a season-high nine blocks - nearly doubling the previous high of five - and held the Bruins to just 28 percent shooting. The Huskies' 33-point win was its largest in the series, and extended its all-time series lead to 22-11.
'This was a great victory tonight,' Daugherty said. 'Give Kayla a lot of credit for her hard work. She has a high basketball IQ, and tonight she was aggressive and had a great feel for the game.'
Washington continues Pac-10 play at 7 p.m. Sunday vs. USC at Bank of America Arena.
