Northern Iowa Defeats Oregon Wrestling, 26-16

Jan. 5, 2002

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Oregon wrestling team fell 26-16 to No. 11 Northern Iowa in front of 761 fans at West Gym in Cedar Falls, Iowa Saturday afternoon. Oregon is 3-3 overall, 2-1 Pac-10 and Northern Iowa improves to 3-1.

'We wrestled well at times, but there were a few occassions that I thought we could have won if we had eliminated mistakes,' Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'But, Eric Webb wrestled very tough and put together the type of match he is capable of.'

Webb upset No. 9 Paul Hynek at Heavyweight, winning 9-4 to put Oregon within three points of Northern Iowa with three matches remaining. Unfortunately, Oregon senior Shaun Williams is sidelined with an ankle injury and the Ducks were forced to forfeit at 125 pounds. That put Northern Iowa up 23-13 with the 133 and 141 pound matches remaining.

Freshman Martin Mitchell wasn't able to overcome No. 12 Mark Manchio at 133, falling 8-6, but Brian Watson did pull the upset at 141, defeating No. 11 Dylan Long, 6-4.

No. 6 Eugene Harris picked up the Ducks' other victory, a 15-5 major decision over No. 19 Nate Lawrenz, while Dustin Fisher won by forfeit at 174.
