Football Writers Name First Freshman All-America Team

CORVALLIS-Mitch Meeuwsen, a starter at strong safety for Oregon State during the 2001 football season, has been selected as a member of the inaugural FWAA (Football Writers Association of America) Freshman All-America team.
Meeuswsen, 6-3, 208, had been selected as a Freshman All-American earlier on two other teams. He was named a Freshman All-American by The Sporting News and by The Football News.
Meeuswen, a redshirt freshman in 2001, started nine games for Oregon State in 2001 and finished as the second-leading defensive point producer among Beaver defensive players. Mitch recorded 53 tackles, broke up nine passes, had three pass interceptions, recovered four fumbles, produced three tackles for loss and had one sack.
Meeuswen is the third member of the current Oregon State football roster to earn first team Freshman All-America honors. Sophomore linebacker Richard Seigler earned the same honor following the 2000 season and junior cornerback Dennis Weathersby was selected after the 1999 season.
