Three Sun Devils Named To <I>The Sporting News</I>' Pac-10 All-Freshman Football Team

Jan. 7, 2002

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State quarterback Andrew Walter and defensive backs R.J. Oliver and Jason Shivers were named to The Sporting News' Pac-10 All-Freshman Football Team, announced Monday.

Walter, who primarily split time with Jeff Krohn as the Sun Devils' signal caller, appeared in 11 games last season, completing 38-of-86 pass attempts for 546 yards and three touchdowns with only two interceptions.

Oliver played in nine games and finished the season ranked fifth on the team with 50 tackles. His two interceptions tied him for the team lead, while his seven pass break-ups stood alone atop the Sun Devil standings.

Perhaps the most outstanding of the three collegiate rookies was Shivers, who led the Sun Devils with 89 tackles in 11 games. Second on that list was Mason Unck at 61 tackles. Earlier this year, Shivers was named to The Sporting News' freshman All-America team. He was also honored within the ASU football program as the freshman defender of the year.
