Wrestling Takes Two at Lone Star Duals

Arlington, Texas - Stanford (3-3, 0-1 Pac-10) went 2-1 on Saturday at the Lone Star Duals to open the new year. The Cardinal took victories from Northwestern, 24-12, and Princeton, 23-15. Sophomore Nathan Peterson (Georgetown, IN/Floyd Central), junior Justin Walker (Otis Orchards, WA/East Valley) and freshman Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) each went undefeated in their three bouts to help the Cardinal claim the two wins. Brown defeated Stanford in the final match for the Cardinal, 22-13.

In the opener against Princeton, Stanford rallied with two late pins by Peterson (125) and Walker (133) to take the 23-15 victory from the Tigers. In the second dual of the day, the Cardinal went up against Big Ten power Northwestern and dominated the Wildacts by a 24-12 margin. Stanford notched seven victories against the Wildcats, including an impressive technical fall by true freshman Imad Kharbush (Livonia, MI/Stevenson) at 174 pounds. Junior Brad Selby (Paradise Valley, AZ/Saguaro) secured an overtime win against Mike Little at 285 pounds to clinch the Stanford victory. Stanford closed out the day falling just short of Brown, 22-13. The Cardinal dropped four individual matches by three points or less. Freshman Brad Metzler (Omaha, NE/Westside) registered his first collegiate dual win.

Peterson's win over Brown was his sixteenth of the season to lead the Cardinal, while Walker and Gentry each tallied their twelfth victories of the year. Peterson and Walker both chalked up a fall, a decision and a major decision in their bouts, while Gentry notched a major decision and two decisions.

Junior Harold Penson (Richmond Heights, OH/Richmond Heights) and senior Levi Weikel-Magden (Boardman, OR) aided the Cardinal with two wins a piece against Northwestern and Princeton.

The Cardinal return to action this upcoming weekend against Columbia at 3 p.m. and Southern Oregon at 5 p.m. on Jan. 11 on the campus of UC Davis. On Sun., Jan. 12, the Cardinal will compete at the Aggie open, also in Davis, Calif.
