UCLA Swimming Defeats Illinois in First Home Meet

In the opening home meet of 2002, UCLA defeated Illinois 174.50 to 125.50. With the win, the Bruins improve to 7-2 overall, 1-2 Pac-10. The Bruins won 10 of 16 events on the way to victory. Leading the way for UCLA were Jen Noddle, Kristen Lewis and Erica Shugart. Noddle finished with three victories and Lewis and Shugart ended the day with a pair of wins.
Senior Jen Noddle won the 100 Breast (1:04.71), 200 Breast (2:18.34) and 200 IM (2:06.32). Lewis won the 200 Fly (2:04.98) and 100 Fly (58.12). And, Shugart won the 50 Free (23.84) and 100 Free (52.78). The 400 Medley Relay team of Katie Winkelhaus, Elvira Fischer, Kristen Lewis and Jeanette Nieto won in a time of 3:52.82.
Other Bruins winners were divers Jen McNally and Michelle Brown. McNally won the one-meter springboard with a NCAA Zone qualifying score of 284.93. Brown also qualified for NCAA Zone competition with a 300.53 score on the three-meter springboard.
UCLA will return to action Friday, January 18, when the diving team will compete at the annual Bruin Invitational at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. The swim team returns to the pool Saturday, January 19, when they will host Washington State and University of the Pacific at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center at noon.
