USC Tennis Teams Enter 2002 With Top Rankings

Jan. 9, 2002

SKILLMAN, N.J. - The USC tennis teams begin the 2002 season ranked among the nation's top 15, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rakings released on Tuesday, Jan. 8. The Women of Troy, who finished last season at No. 8, rank seventh this year, while the men's team jumped eight spots from last year's final poll to enter 2002 at No. 12.

The USC women return all six starters -- including two-time All-America Jewel Peterson -- from last year's squad which advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals. The team also welcomes highly touted newcomer Luana Magnani (Pasadena, Calif.) who advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Regional Championship this fall and enters the regular season with an 11-2 preseason mark. USC opens the regular season at home against UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 1:30 p.m.

The USC men also return their entire 2001 starting lineup. Last season the Trojans defeated Virginia and Mississippi en route to the NCAA Round of 16. Leading the way this year are three seniors, USC's All-American doubles team of Nick Rainey and Ryan Moore and two-time All-Pac-10 selection Andrew Park. The Trojans open their season on Wednesday, Jan. 23, against Fresno State at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Stadium.
